The <<New Babylon>> vision of a utopian city, created by Constant in the 1950s, shows a totally automated city, promising freedom combined with prosperity. New Babylon is characterised by the economy of excess and lack of productivity. The inhabitants act like players in a space whose proportions are defined by the logic of mobility. Constant treated New Babylon as a model of potential transformation of Western economy, culture and urban spaces. The question remains, to what extent have this transformation been carried out and whether the promise of freedom has been kept.
